Companies, and the technologists within them, can learn several things from Facebook’s experiences. Our customers and prospects are among the largest and most technically advanced organizations in the state. Dealing with growth and change, choosing what software to use, allocating engineering personnel, using data centers, etc. are all issues technologists interested in ethernet deployments confront. That is why I wrote the post.

As for the use of Cassandra/MySQL at Facebook, I got my information from Facebook’s Fact Sheet, which states, “The company is the largest user in the world of memcached, an open source caching system, and has one of the largest MySQL database clusters anywhere.” I did some more digging, and according to Facebook’s Open Source page, Facebook uses both MySQL and Cassandra.

My goal with these blog posts is to provide valuable information and commentary to our customers, friends, and prospective customers. I plan to write on general technology trends and business advice in addition to issues specific to our industry.

Besides that small problem, please get your facts straight. Facebook does NOT use MySQL. It uses an in-house developed scalable database called Cassandra.

Physical characteristics of the fiber, increased signal levels, amplification nonlinearity, inconsistent or ‘dirty’ connector end-faces as well as components on the fiber such as splices and connector terminations can all be a factor that cause increased attenuation. Attenuation (loss and back reflection) can be measured by using an Optical Power Meter and an Optical Light Source, or an Integrated Power Meter / Light Source for bidirectional testing (pair needed), or an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and a Handheld Power Meter. (It is recommended to utilize a fiber reference jumper for all scenarios). When testing large fiber counts, data storage and the ability to download the information to a computer, is essential.
