It has been a very difficult year for 1Velocity and our communities. Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada have been number one on many lists of which we are not proud, including the highest rate of foreclosures, unemployment, and bankruptcies in the nation. Many of our largest companies have been on the brink or have filed bankruptcy in the last year.

However, despite all the challenges, 1Velocity has made some very important progress.

As we begin our fourth year, 1Velocity continues to grow.

We just closed out the fiscal year, and despite the recession, 1Velocity had record revenues last year. This year is off to a good start as well. Revenues for the first quarter of this fiscal year are up from the previous year. Remarkably, we have also cut expenses over the last year.

As the economy continues to improve and more organizations learn about 1Velocity’s unique services, we hope to continue to help more organizations improve redundancy, save money, and get more done quickly with Internet and private Ethernet connections over wireless fiber.

Netflix and the U.S. Government are moving parts of their infrastructure to Amazon Web Services, and apparently they’re not alone.

The majority of SMB’s now have a “SaaS first” policy, they prefer it. Many of the respondents to Goldman’s survey indicated they were using SaaS in this economy for TCO reasons, to save money…

Amazon.com is used by 67 percent of the survey respondents. It is clearly the out-in-front leader, despite being a “newcomer” to enterprise IT. For internal clouds, VMware’s leadership remains pronounced, with 83 percent of respondents using its virtualization technology.

1Velocity was founded by former IT professionals used to dealing with legacy carriers, so we do things the way an IT person would want them done.

The name 1Velocity comes from the fact that we do not oversubscribe our network, so our customers always get the same speeds no matter how busy the network is. The connection never slows down. You get one speed, or one velocity, always.

We do other things the way an IT professional would want them, too. We don’t block ports or do packet-shaping. We hand-off Layer 1 Ethernet, and there are zero hops between customer locations on our network.

We’re flexible and strive to be easy to work with. When you call support, you get a network engineer who can isolate and solve the problem with you. Every customer gets an escalation list including the CEO’s cell phone. And since we own our own network, we don’t pass you off to someone else.

The Technology Business Alliance of Nevada (TBAN) yesterday named 1Velocity as the Startup of the Year. The award will be presented at TBAN’s annual TechNevada Honors luncheon on October 21. Other honorees include Zappos.com, Falcon Technology, Smart City Networks, and Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects.

TechNevada Startup of the Year: 1Velocity

Founded in Las Vegas in 2006 by Justin Steele, Brett Lewis, Kim Payne and Mike Ballard, 1Velocity has pioneered the use of millimeter-wave spectrum for metro Ethernet telecommunication services. 1Velocity now serves customers in both Reno and Las Vegas, providing Internet Access and Ethernet private lines to government and businesses.

The increasing use of shared applications, web services, and IP-based solutions is increasing demand for larger data connections. But many organizations cannot get the bandwidth they need without spending tens of thousands of dollars to bring in fiber.

At the same time, the growing importance of data services to government and business is driving the need for redundant data line providers.

One key characteristic that makes 1Velocity unique is that they do not share any physical infrastructure with other telecommunications carriers. Delivering speeds up to 2 Gbps, 1Velocity can often provide high bandwidth connections to locations other carriers cannot reach.

Independent organizations rank 1Velocity highest in average speed and customer satisfaction among local carriers. More than half their sales continue to come from existing customers.

1Velocity’s customers include some of the most well-known and highly respected organizations in Nevada: Allegiant Air, the State of Nevada, the Cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, Palms Hotel & Casino, Grand Sierra Resort, Bank of Nevada, Desert Radiologists, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Despite the economic downturn, 1Velocity’s revenues have grown this year by sixty-five percent and by more than 850 percent in the last two years.

Eighty-percent of commercial buildings still do not have access to fiber:

Fiber penetration now extends to 19.1% of U.S. commercial buildings with twenty or more employees, up from 10.9% in 2004. All remaining locations comprise the “Fiber Gap”, or business locations with no fiber access facilities. Optical fiber is a key enabler for the delivery of broadband network services at speeds up to Gigabit rates, including Business Ethernet, IP VPNs, VoIP and IP video.

One of the things that makes 1Velocity unique is that we can deliver up to 1 Gbps Ethernet to the other 80% of buildings without fiber.

About once a month, I come across a company with over 50 employees (this week, one with 70) and only a 3 Mbps bonded T1 for Internet. Sometimes they upgrade to a 8 Mbps 1Velocity connection for the same as they were paying before for 3 Mbps. Everyone in the company comments on how much faster the connection is. They can get more work done and provide better service. One of our customers:

Our core agency application runs in a hosted environment via the internet. With this in mind greater bandwidth is key to achieving optimum efficiency. We can’t keep our clients on hold or waiting for us to wait on our data to be retrieved, but one of our biggest problems was a very large download of data that we perform on a daily basis.

By switching to 1Velocity we are now able to complete this download before the staff arrives each morning, thus having no impact on Internet usage and our VoIP, but most importantly we improved our response and customer service. We pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service, so moving to 1Velocity was a key decision in continuing this effort.

— Robert Church, Orgill/Singer & Associates
Commercial Insurance Brokers

These days, most employees spend a majority of their time online using email and a web browser. If you have 50 employees, probably 40 are online at any given time. That means with a 3 Mbps connection, each employee only has a 75 kbps Internet connection (3M ÷ 40 = 75k).

How many employees do you have? How much work do they do on email and through the web browser? Could your company’s productivity or service improve if each person’s connection was almost 3X faster for the same price?
